Career

College and amateur

vanSchaik grew up in Tualatin, Oregon, attended Tualatin High School, and won state titles with club teams Southside SC in 2000 and FC Portland in 2002 and 2006 before going on to play four years of college soccer at the University of Portland. He was voted to the WCC All-Freshman Team as a rookie in 2007, was named to the All-WCC First Team as a junior in 2009 and as a senior in 2010. vanSchaik led his team in his senior year with eight goals and three assists, and finished his college career with 13 goals and 14 assists in over 70 games for the Pilots.

During his college years vanSchaik also played in the USL Premier Development League for the Portland Timbers U23's, and had the honor of scoring that team's first ever goal in a competitive match, a 2-2 tie with the Victoria Highlanders on May 9, 2009.[1]

Professional

vanSchaik was drafted in the third round (52nd overall) of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft by Real Salt Lake,[2] and trained with the team throughout the 2011 Major League Soccer pre-season, but was not offered a contract by the team.

Instead, vanSchaik signed a contract to play for the Puerto Rico Islanders of the North American Soccer League. He made his professional debut on May 14, 2011 in a 7-0 victory over Surinamese club Walking Bout Company in the 2011 CFU Club Championship.[3]
